J. Yale Gordon
J. Yale Gordon, 89, of Harrisburg, passed away on Sunday, February 28, 2010 in the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center after a brief illness.
He was born on December 14, 1920 in Reading, PA to the late Meyer and Sadie (Williams) Gordon. He was a graduate of the former William Penn High School in Harrisburg and a United States Army Veteran of WW II.
Yale was the owner of the former Grandview Hotel in Carlisle and the co-owner along with his brother, Herman of M. Gordon & Sons, Inc. of Harrisburg.
He was a member of Chisuk Emuna Congregation of Harrisburg, the Chisuk Emuna Brotherhood and had served on the Building Committee of Chisuk Emuna. He was a member and former Building Committee member of the Jewish Community Center, a member of the Jewish Federation of Greater Harrisburg, and a member of the Jewish Community Center Sports Hall of Fame. He had played professional basketball for the former Harrisburg Senators.
Yale will be remembered for his many awards and achievements throughout the community as well as his philanthropic endeavors.
He was the widower of Miriam Fay (Nydick) Gordon.
Surviving are his daughter Beverly G. Zalonis and her husband Tom of Harrisburg, a brother Herman L. Gordon and his wife Lois of Harrisburg, 3 sisters; Anna Dubin of Harrisburg, Dorothy Swimmer of Harrisburg, Esther Katz and her husband Norman of Harrisburg, 2 granddaughters: Kimberly Gordon and her companion Fred Fedok, Jennifer Weiss and her husband Michael, 2 great grandchildren: Madelyn Weiss, Cooper Weiss, numerous nieces and nephews as well as Yale's companion Lorraine Hocker of Harrisburg.
Funeral services will be held at 10am on Tuesday, March 2. 2010 in the Chapel of Chisuk Emuna Cemetery with Rabbi Ron Muroff officiating. Burial will be in Chisuk Emuna Cemetery.
Shiva will be observed at the home of Jennifer & Michael Weiss, 2321 Abbey Lane Harrisburg, PA 17112 from 2-8pm on Tuesday, March 2, 2010 thru Thursday, March 4, 2010 with evening Minyan at 5:45pm. Morning Minyan will be at 7am on Wednesday, March 3, 2010 thru Friday, March 5, 2010, and on Sunday, March 7, 2010 at 8:30am and on Monday, March 8, 2010 7am at Chisuk Emuna Services in the Jewish Community Center.
